It seems mid sized companies probably afford more freedom. I work for a corporate owned automotive company. While specific projects at my plant are often totally at my discretion, the corporate IT policies make doing anything new a real pain. Nobody outside of IT dept has admin rights of any kind, so I can't even download a USB/serial adapter driver without getting my IT dept involved.
