I have a Siemens 1214C PLC
It only has a RJ45 Profinet(LAN) Socket on it
To communicate to it I have TIA Portal V11 on a laptop
How do you know what the IP address scheme is if the PLC
was pulled from a system and you have no idea what
the IP address scheme was
Thanks

The unit has a MAC under the cover.
I don't have TIA but under Step 7 you'd select PLC -> Edit Ethernet Node ->
From the pop up menu, start detection and look for the MAC of the unit.
It should display the currently assigned IP.
Or..
use the Primary Setup Tool, it's easier, it will also display anything connected to the ethernet port of your PC.

I think...
in tIA...
Open a new project, blank, no hardware.
From the top choose Online.
Choose Display accessible nodes.
From the pop up choose PN/IE and your network card/hardware..
the do a search, should display accessible nodes and IP's, MACs , etc.

Yes, Accessible nodes should at least tell you that it found a device but with a different IP address range and then ask you if it should add that addres range to your network card.

ok I did "Open a new project, blank, no hardware.
From the top choose Online.
Choose Display accessible nodes.
From the pop up choose PN/IE and your network card/hardware.."

and it did find it and showed the IP
I then changed the IP Scheme on the PC to match that of the PLC

I am now trying to figure out how to grab the code off the PLC
If it was step 7 I can do that but I seem to not be able to find
the right menu selection to do that in TIA Portal V11
Any help?

Thanks

In V13 you can right click on the controller object then select upload from device. Maybe the option is the same in V11?

I tried with V13.
In your blank project, insert the same PLC model, don't worry about the rest of the modules.
Give the PLC the same IP as the one in the field.
Right click on the newly created PLC and select "Backup from online Device".
Go through the steps and you should have the actual configuration uploaded to your PC.
Use the same steps as above and now select "Upload from device (software)".
This should upload all the actual blocks from the online plc to your project.
As mentioned above I'm also using v13 not sure if v11 has this option.

So I tried that

But the part number is 6ES7 214 1BG31 0XB0
and when I select SIMATIC S7-1200 CPU that number is not listed

I just added to a blank project an S7 1200 device and picked "Unspecified CPU" from the list.
I am using V13, not sure what you have in V11.
If you manage to add the "Unspecified CPU" to the project then you have two options:
1. Use the hardware catalog to specify the new CPU
2. Detect the new CPU.

this works for me.
It may be an issue with the V11, not sure, I don't have a VM with V11 with me.

Yea I tried that, it would not recognize the PLC because the part number was not in the list.
Damm Siemens makes this so hard

Update

Download of Update 5 for STEP 7 Basic/Professional and WinCC Basic/Comfort/Advanced/Professional V11 SP2

I added update 5, but that plc still does not show up

I think you may need V13 for your particular CPU. I have attached screenshot showing your CPU in the add device tree. You can go to the Siemens website and download a 21 day trial version of TIA Portal V13. Basic will support the 1200 series CPU's, if you want the ability to connect to 1500 CPU's you will also need to install the V13 Pro SP1 update.

Try to download the support packages (under the tab options), it might include your PLC.

There is a big chance the original code was done in a later version of TIA, I doubt you will be able to upload it from the PLC. But you might prove me wrong.

Either way, I would strongly suggest to upgrade to V13, V11 is a pain in the ***.
