If you can't get onsite your only hope is to enable the record log file and see whats happening. If you have left the record log file enabled since the beginning that could also be your problem. If the file gets too large it will cause problems.

I disabled the "Record Log File" before I left site.

Unfortunately, I will need to go to site, to re-enable it, and then back again to disable it again.

Additional snag is that when I go to site, and download the program (with Log Enable), that action alone may clear the current problem, until it crops up again, a few months down the line.

Okay, we have an engineer onsite at the moment (unfortunately he will be leaving site later today, though he may delay a day or so, if there is a solution).
He has activated the Sync Manager log, see extract below, which seems to constantly repeating.

Can anyone clarify what this log is trying to tell me?

There are several datalog files on the compactflash, some of which are individually quite large (10+MB).

Is it possible that there is now too much data on the CF card, such that HMI access is stalling out??

Any help would be much appreciated!!!
