Remote I/O Assembly? NI-PXI Rack

Currently we interface from National Instruments PXI rack computers to Allen Bradley Control and Compact Logix PLC through discrete I/O.

The NI documentation states that it can be setup as a "Remote I/O Assembly" which will create faster communication.

Any idea what they are talking about.
