Wally, you must provide more details about versions. What version of RSLinx, RSLogix 5000, Windows 7?

Once you have RSLinx installed it will run in Lite version without activation, it will enable you to use RSLogix to communicate with your PLC's, if you need DDE or OPC then you will need a licence, when installing you should have used the licence number from your OEM version.

It will open in icon tray in win xp just double click and open it, and configure type of communication protocol if you are using rs232 then select df1 device and then configure it will work...
