Can someone just highlight the difference between the MPI and Profibus protocols? If they are both running over RS485, why is the data rate and no. of nodes so different?

Hello yxannes;

Modbus can also run on RS-485, but most Modbus implementations will run at 9600 bauds, some at 19200.
It depends on the hardware used (modem chips, ASICs) and the chosen implementation of the data tranfer protocols.
Hope this helps,
Daniel Chartier
