AB High Speed Counter with Encoder

I know I am getting in on the tail end of this, but the encoder on the motor doesn't matter. The HSC card is only connected to the emulated incremental encoder outputs on the drive. The drive talks serially(proprietary protocol) to the encoder.

You state you are connecting to the motor, but that can't be the case. There must be a Yaskawa drive involved.

That will be about impossible. He will first need a VFD that can commutate a permanent magnet motor. After that, he will need to get a converter to convert the Yaskawa serial to incremental. After that, he will somehow have to figure out rotor position.

I guess I shouldn't say impossible, since I have run a PM motor open loop with an ABB ASCM1 drive before. I wouldn't do that for a positioning application, but it is fine for a velocity application.

Thanks very much for the information. This is part of a school project (3rd year engineering). We are limited in our available resources and as such we end up matching up different manufacturer's components. I have found a similiar sized AB motor (Y-1002-2-H00aa) which can feedback to the HSC card. This has caused a new problem as we are attempting to drive it using a Leeson SM2 Flux Vector VFD via PID control with the PLC. I am having a hard time getting the VFD set up correctly so the motor runs smoothly. I also have available an AB ultra 3000 servo drive which I think would mate much easier to the AB motor.
Watching the converstation between you guy's highlights to me my lack of knowledge and your superior knowledge regarding electrical control. Thanks for all your suggestions, feedback!
