Are You On The Clock?

On the "PLC" thread, now at over 200 posts, a lot of time has been put in by members here.

A refresher, it started out...

Plc
May any one help me to fine ladder diagram for this circuit please
thank you

Anyway, it may have been posted by a "one post wonder", or a prankster. Who knows, who cares.

In post #36, Terry mentioned I should do a poll. I noticed that today, having been avoiding this thread for quite some time. So, a little late, but here it is...

So, at least two curious minds want to know... Are you on the clock?

regards.....casey

P.S. Thanks Terry!

Yes, I do spend some time online with PLCS at work, with "Managment" 's blessings...They have seen the light as to how much Great info is on this site and how it has pulled me ( us ) out of some DUHH!šŸ™ƒ ;) problems...plus since I leave my laptop on the shop Break table some of the folks will even sit down and read a thread or two...they haven't gotten up the courage to post yet, but they do ask questions...which is a first step.

Thanks back at you Casey!

So far, I see that I am one of only two that do not hang at PLCnet while they should be doing business.

I am under great pressure to get "on the net" but I refuse to do so simply because I feel that I owe my allegiance to my primary endevour. PLCnet is too great a temptation... not that I hang here for answers. It has happened that I hanged for an answer, at least once, maybe twice... in all of five years!

I just can't believe how many guys I see that have been on-site, regularly, during working hours, when they should be doing for their bread & butter!

A lot of us Irish-Catholic-Democrat kids have really internalized the fundamental concept of the Puritan work-ethic. (look it up)

There are some that haven't quite developed that particular ethic. However, when in a controlling position, they absolutely love having guys like us working for them... after all, we make the money!

The way I see it, if a guy is hanging at PLCnet for the answers, during working-hours, he ain't reading his own damned manuals to figure out what's going on in his own PLC, so that he he really understand his own particular PLC!

"Short-Cutters" are NOT "Process Developers".

They ain't got the Moxie!

They are Losers! They'll NEVER be "players"... at best... maybe "band-aid"ers.

And I really choke on the... "I'm the Employer, so it doesn't matter" concept.

Don't you guys have management issues to tend to? How about doing more for your customer? Do you feel that your business is so perfect that you don't need to work on what your customer expects, as promised in your promo-material? You're all trying to "Sell the Moon! How about putting in the time to deliver on that promise?

Yeah, yeah, yeah....

wow,,thats kind of hardlining it a bit much isnt it?...

I spend a little time on the net at work reading posts at plcs.net,,maybe 20 minutes on a regular 10 hr shift,,,I dont come here for answers for the most part,,but mainly to see what others are going through and how it relates to what i do,,and some times i just read up a lil cause there are some fun people here,,

I consider this place more of a refuge for other similiar thinking people and some of which are more successful than I that i can model my self after,,granted some may view this self advancement as something i should do off the clock, but my boss doesnt mind and is impressed that im not here to punch the clock and collect my paycheck,,instead he knows im looking to have his job at some point,,I made it very clear my first week on the job that i wanted his office,,some thought i was joking,,but oh well,,

where i work we have other shifts(and one person on my shift) that abuse the internet(looking up pornography,,dating sites,,shopping,,etc),,just as they do breaks,,idle time,,etc,,i know there are supposed to be means intact to catch those doing that,,but its obviously not working,,Its not my place to monitor that so at present i just sit and watch,,and when it comes that i am in charge if people are getting their work done,,and use the internet to look up educational information that pertains to the job(like places like this) i cant imagine i would discourage it,,

I also might add that on my regular 10 hr shift(10.5 hrs at work) i take one 20-30 minute lunch and maybe 3 days a week will also take a 15 minute break,,and its very regular for me to put in a 12-13 hr day with less than a hour of 'break' time,,so when i do find the time to look up some information while checking my email,,i dont feel guilty for doing that(this week im pushing 75 hrs),,my work ethic i feel is pretty sound,,and if i was doing something wrong,,i would feel some guilt on it,,and i dont,,and my boss doesnt complain,,so im sure im doing ok

Fred Raud

ps,,im at home on my only day off this week,,,BTW

another thing i may add,,is ive worked at places where the internet was completely prohibited for anything that wasnt directly related to work(unless you were a supervisor,,then the shopping/**** etc was over looked),,and thought my job description required me to have my laptop at work,,i had to start leaving it at home when a couple production supervisors didnt like that i was using my laptop to upload the plc programs for back up and thought they should have a laptop as well and access to the plc programs,,an absurd idea,,but to apease them i was told to work on plc type projects at home(no office),,that also is the time where i found plcs.net btw,,i think i participated in a thread about laptops at the work place and who should supply them(being i had to supply my own)

Interesting poll. I see no one has responded to one "tick".

I actually responded to
While at work, I'm the employer, so...It doesn't matter.

I work for myself from home - sometimes 16-18 hours a day and sometimes a lot less - travel all over the place as well.

Call in when I have a few spare moments (can be anytime) and between playing games - I think my wife is of the opinion that I spend a lot of time playing games but I can assure you that she has absolutely no problem spending any money I make.

Since I'm a salaried employee, "the clock" is pretty elastic. Even if I spend an hour on PLCs.net per day, the Company is still going to get their 50 hours a week.

It doesn't hurt that part of my job is "Allen-Bradley support, training and public relations" and that's most of what I do on the site, too.

The site is a temptation, though; I removed it from my toolbar when I discovered I was navigating here more than to my own e-mail. And my girlfriend discovered she can keep tabs on me by checking my post times.... I've gotten calls late at night when I'm on the road, saying "I know you're still up- you just posted to PLCs.net !"

I'm on salary as well so I guess I'm *always* on the clock. I also sense a generational difference. Companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Genetech almost expect employees to do a lot of web surfing while online at work. No wonder they are in such dire finacial situation. I don't expect someone like Terry will ever understand. Good thing too because no way he will ever hire me and I'll ever work for him.

We will always be slackers and turn this country/world into a wastebasket. BTW. I'm a Gen-X'er if you can't already tell.

Oh, got run to goof off some more. Adieu!

On the clock, off the clock. I work and surf at work, I surf and work at home.

It's Saturday morning, I'm at work (voluntarily), and I'm logged in.

My last 'appraisal' here actually cited that one of my 'plus points' was my continued 'monitoring' of PLC forums (This one and "Mr PLC"), and the gathering of information and opinions therein.
These (the info and opinions) are very good plus points in my line of work
Guess it depends on who (or what) you work for. :)

Yes Iā€™m on the clock, itā€™s Saturday so that means that itā€™s over time for me (does that mean I need to type 1.5 times faster?), I work 75 hrs a week on the average, I spend about 30-45 min. a day on plctalk.net for a few reasons.

1st being that the majority electrician/programmers have the same crude sarcastic sense of humor, I do believe that we need to enjoy life for it to be fulfilling (laughter is enjoyment) this is better then looking at **** or shopping or at least itā€™s work related and productive (somewhat)

2nd being that I enjoy learning, I donā€™t look for very many specific answers, but ones that will lead me in the correct way of thinking, there are a lot of trouble shooters out there, but there are very few really good ones, I want to be the best. There are not many times that you can wait for a answer, the name of the game is production, if itā€™s a project that I have ample time to complete, then I would ask more specific question...but thatā€™s never happened.

3rd Being one of the original cofounders of that thread PLC (gave everyone their first jobs), I have to stay and see if it that thread ever dies.

And last but not least... just as many of you that are on here, it is a privilege to have the knowledge and ability to help someone learn. That is the real reason that web sites like Philā€™s and Ronā€™s and others are in existence.

PS. And I have not found that ever elusive last page of the internet, I will keep looking.

I check the board a few times during the day, some from home, and some from work. Usually if I post a question, it's during working hours, because that's when I need the answers.

At the moment, I'm posting from home.

I'd have to say being a salaried employee, I do at least once a day try and "skim" over the threads, some days it isnt possible.
If one interest's me, I'll read it. Once and a while, I'll post. I am lucky though, my boss consider's the internet a tool, just the same a screwdriver and expects me to use it to find info, and use it everyday. He always say's he's amazed how quickly I can find an answer to lets say technical quesiton about a piece of equipment. He says when was my age, it took longer to just find the manual..

Well this is kinda ironic... One of the few times I check this site out while 'on the clock' and there's a poll about it.

Usually when I'm at work, I'm working. If I visit this site, it's only to ask a question that pertains to what I'm working on.

I do spend a lot of time on this site when I'm at home though. Too much good info to pass up.
