Gateways are fine if you need them, better to avoid if you can. Do you by chance have a Red Lion HMI or DSP or PTV in the system? If so, that can easily act as a gateway if it's within RS232 range of the field device.

Will the Flex 5000 work with the L7x? I'm pretty sure the 5069 IO will not. Their client insists on an -L71.

Yes, I think you are correct, my mistake. The 5000 series IO (Both FLEX and Compact) I believe are only L8xE controllers.

Unfortunately this system isn’t using red lion,
We don’t have have DSP or PTV within recommended serial distance.
