Whey hey hey ... Have finally sorted this problem. Ignorant to the fact, I hadn't set COM1 (in XP Mode) to be mapped to the computers 'physical serial port'. For anyone interested (though I'm sure most of you geeks already know this) you right click your virtual machine (.vmcx file) and go in to 'settings' then select your COM port to 'physical serial port'. Not sure if this also had any influence, but I noticed that COM1 in xpmode had an IRQ different to windows 7 COM1 , so I made these the same (IRQ 4) - I read somewhere both COM1 ports (windows7 & xpmode) need to be configured the same.

Anyroad, it's all talking now and Im a happy bunny ... for now
