Need some help with AD:
My friend who owns small shop wants to retrofit one of his machines with AD PLC.
He took some time already trying to select PLC without any results, so he called me today.
Unfortunately I never used AD myself so hoping you guys can give us some help with PLC selection

Why AD? that is what he wants and I am not at the point to tell him something else.

Processor with 12 PID loops, FP math
Serial port for an existing HMI (E900T)
Ethernet port (optional for now)
12 TC inputs K and J
12 Analog 4-20mA outputs to heather control relays
32 Digital Inputs 120VAC
16 Triac 1Amp outputs 120VAC
16 0.3A outputs 120VAC
1 Axis motion controller to analog servo - new Mutsu drive he has.
All software, cables, printed manuals.

Any advice appriciated

Thanks

That's what we like to see, just jump in with both feet and let 'r rip......I'm sure that if you have questions that one of us will help you...right Eric?....
Really though, I think that an AD260 family is going to get you started, but I'm not sure...my books are in the car...if it will support that many PID loops. You may have togo to one of the PC based systems,...again I don't know the part #'s.

Have fun......David

Here is what I got so far with 260:

D2-260 CPU 30.4K WORDS W/16-LOOPS FLOATING PT MATH $299.00 $299.00
D2-USER-M DL205 PRODUCT USER MANUAL $36.00 $36.00
PC-PGMSW DIRECTSOFT PROGRAMMING S/W F ALL DL PLCS 32BIT $495.00 $495.00
D2-DSCBL PC PGMING CABLE DL05/06 DL105 205 350 450 $30.00 $30.00
D2-DSCBL-1 D2-250 PC PROGRAMMING CABLE FOR BOTTOM PORT $30.00 $30.00
D2-16NA 16PT 110VAC INPUT $119.00 $238.00
F2-08TA 8PT 24-140VAC OUTPUT HIGH CURRENT 1.5A/PT $119.00 $476.00
F2-08DA-1 8 CH ANALOG OUT 4-20MA 12BIT RES SINK/SRCE $299.00 $598.00
F2-04THM 4 CHANNEL THERMOCOUPLE OR 16-BIT VOLT INPUT $299.00 $897.00

Now, what about motion controller?

The H2-CTRIO module has motion control capabilities. You might want to contact tech support to make sure it will work with your drive.

Me personally started out using AD 205 series but moved up to the 405 series. seem lil heavier duty, plus on the 205 I/O modules you have to switch to monitor the indicator lights wich can make trouble shooting hair pulling

For tech support call this number 1-(805) 493-5848 Mike Kavanaugh, he is the one i talk with for AD support, very helpfull. Though I dont know if he works for Automation Direct, or Qauntam Automation. But they are like a sister company I believe

Okay, since I am not sure how far you want to go with this, you can save some money right off.

Go with:

PC-PGM-205 DIRECTSOFT PROGRAMMING S/W F ALL 205 PLCS 32BIT $199.00 $199.00

If you are only going to do 205 series it is not worth buying the whole package.

You also only need one of these:

D2-DSCBL or D2-DSCBL-1. I would go with the D2-DSCBL so that you can program the 05/06/105 series in the future without buying a new cable. You are going to need the bottom port for your HMI anyhow. Serial port for an existing HMI (E900T)

You also do not have to buy the manual. It is free for download from AD's website.

Those three combined knocks $462.00 off the price.

The one thing you are missing that I can tell is the rack. Based on the card count you will need 2. You will also need the expansion module to connect the racks to each other.

I recommend:
Code:
(2) D2-09B-1 9 SLOT BASE WITH INTERNAL 110/220 VAC P/S $192.00 $384.00
(2) D2-EM DL205 EXPANSION MOD INSTALL ON SIDE OF EACH BASE $ 56.00 $112.00
(1) D2-EXCBL-1 DL205 BASE EXPANSION CABLE 1-METER $ 5.00 $ 5.00

You will also need for later the Ethernet connection:
Code:
(1) H2-ECOM 10BASE-T ETHERNET 205 NETWORK MODULE $285.00 $285.00
I hope this helps get you started.
I am going to leave the speccing out of the drive controller to one of the other members since I have not used any of those yet.

When you're getting all this setup keep in mind that some modules can only be in the first rack (ecom for sure, probably CITRO as well). I'd put all the analog in the second rack so moving things later doesn't mess up your discrete I/O map.

Another thing I would recomend, is using AD ziplinks for wire termination, On the 205 PLC the erminal strips on the module is really tight, and hard to land unless your using small wire like 22 ga.

I had a large disaster since my last post:
Huge lightning strike on my backyard.
Damage found so far:
- Linksys Cable modem - dead
- Netgear Wireless router - dead
- D-link switch - light blinking without cables - dead
4 desktops, 2 laptops and 2 print serves looks like OK
I am pretty sure surge went through the antenna of the wireless router.
Went to Best Buy got new modem: at least I have internet back on

Now back to AD stuff:
Looks like I got all major parts correct, I added racks and adapters as recommended.

Motion controller - looks like exactly what I need - drive actually set to use a pulse control not the analog.
Will call AD to verify.

Software: I don't really know what he will be buying; he may have software already, because he has one small AD as far as I know.

HMI going to the bottom port: I am pretty sure HMI is RS422 as it currently talking to the Mitsu FX. Will it work? Does E-terminal support A-D? I saw Koyo driver, but did not see A-D.

PIDs - how easy to setup PIDs compare to Mitsu FX or AB PLCs?
12 PIDs will be used for temperature control.

Thanks every one for help!

E-terminals will talk to your 205 just fine.... :nodi:

Probably out of your budget, but I would go with a 405 with three F4-4LTC 4-loop temperature controllers...

I have no budget for this project as I am just a friendly adviser for my buddy.

Lets make 405 setup! Any motion controllers for 405's?

Yup! The H4-CTRIO is the 405 version.

You might also look at the F4-16PID module in lieu of the 4LTCs I mentioned. I haven't used one myself, but it sounds much more appropriate for your application.

EDIT: The F4-16PID has 16 loops, and you only need 12 for your temperature control. Perhaps one of the spares could be used for your positioning control? If so, then you won't need the CTRIO...

I recommend:
Code:
(2) D2-09B-1 9 SLOT BASE WITH INTERNAL
(2) D2-EM DL205 EXPANSION MOD INSTALL ON SIDE OF EACH BASE
(1) D2-EXCBL-1 DL205 BASE EXPANSION CABLE 1-METER

What about D2-CM module? I don't see it mentioned here, but the manual said "must be in the extension rack in the processor slot"?
