Applications where Safety PLCs must be used

I am looking for some applications where Safety PLCs / Safety Networks / Safety MMIs to be used . While reading some manuals of Safety PLCs they mentioned about Burner Management , Clutch / Brake Control for Hydraulic press , Rail Road applications etc.

Now first all I don't know the functional process details of above applications and what is the role of a Safety PLC/ Network/MMI in them. If anybody knows about these applications , please give me some information and direct me to a url where i can get very simple descriptions ( probably with some pictures ). Also if anybody of you know about other applications where Safety PLCs can be used , please give some ideas.

Try a google search under "emergency shutdown systems". You will get a pile of hits under that. Petrochem industries are heavily invested in this for fire and gas detection systems.

ICE 61508 is a european standard on "Functional Safety" which might help you out.
